Glossary of the book

CHAPTERS 1 AND 2
  • Lawer: The principles, rules, and regulations set up by a government, other authority, or by custom, that apply to all the people of a group.
  • Evil eye: A look thought capable of inflicting injury or bad luck on the person at whom it is directed.
  • Wolves: A meat-eating animal resembling and related to the dog.
  • Sharp: having a thin cutting edge or a fine point for cutting or piercing
  • Claws: a sharp, curved nail on the foot of an animal, such as on a cat.
  • Breath: the air taken into and sent out of the lungs while breathing:
  • Chapel: Separate part of a church, or a small structure like a church, used for special religious services.
CHAPTERS 3 AND 4
  • Warning: The act of one that warns
  • Dust: matter in fine, powdery, dry particles:
  • Crawled: To move with the head or face downward and the body close to the ground, or on the hands and knees
  • Spread out: To stretch out, esp. over a flat surface.
  • Fainted: Laking brightness, vividness, clearness, loudness, strength, etc.
  • Searched: to look through (a place, etc.) to find something lost

CHAPTERS 5 AND 6
  • Churchyard: the ground near a church, used as a graveyard.
  • Bat: lying nocturnal mammal,often the size of a mouse.
  • Garlic: consisting of smaller bulbs, or cloves, used in cooking.
  • Footprints: A mark left by a foot, as in earth or sand.

CHAPTERS 7 AND 8
  • Sight: the power or ability of seeing or vision
  • Lid: A removable or hinged cover for closing the opening, usually at the top, of a pot, jar, trunk, etc.;
    a movable cover.
  • Coffin: the box in which the body of a dead person is buried.
  • Crack: to break without separation of parts
  • Host: The bread or wafer consecrated in the celebration of the Eucharist.
  • Seal: An emblem, symbol, etc., placed on something to show its authenticity

CHAPTERS 9 AND 10
  • Whistle: to make a high, clear sound by forcing the breath through stretched lips or through the teeth
  • Chased away: to follow rapidly or intently in order to overtake, etc.;
    pursue
  • Gasped: sudden, short intake of breath, as in shock or surprise
  • Chest: the front portion of the body enclosed by the ribs
  • Sprang at: to rise, leap, or move suddenly and swiftly
  • Mist: A mass of tiny drops of water, resembling fog
  • Shuddered: to tremble with a sudden movement, as from horror.
  • Holy: Recognized as or declared sacred by religious use or authority;
  • Revenge: To demand or give punishment for a wrong done to (someone), esp. in an unforgiving spirit
  • Doomed: fate or destiny
  • Harm: Injury or damage

CAPTERS 11 AND 12
  • Confront: to face (someone) in hostility
  • Trick: a sneaky scheme to deceive or cheat
  • Falling under her spell: Falling under the control of someone.
  • Stabbed: to pierce with or as if with a pointed weapon
  • Shivelled: to (cause to) become smaller and wrinkled or curled up, as from great heat
